M916 6X6 Light Equipment Tractor
The M916 tractor is part of the M915 series of logistics trucks. This series consists of M915, M916, M917, M918, M919 and M920. In the US Army, it is called Light Equipment Transport (LET). Replaced in service with the M123 truck tractor. These vehicles are found mainly in active and standby transport units. These units transport bulk cargo from ocean ports to divisional theater support areas.
M916 is similar to the M915 tractor, but has a 6x6 wheel arrangement instead of 6x4. It has better off-road capability than the M915.
This truck is used as a tractor for the M172A1 low bed trailer. This combination can carry loads with a maximum weight of 20t. Typically, this vehicle carries heavy construction equipment, containers and other military supplies.
The truck is equipped with a day cab. Accommodates a driver and two passengers. The cabin has an all-metal construction. Some additional armor kits have been developed for the M915 series trucks by several companies. They provide protection against small arms fire, artillery shell fragments, and some degree of protection against improvised explosive devices.
This line tractor is powered by a Cummins NTC 400 turbocharged diesel engine developing 400 hp. It is aggregated with a Caterpillar semi-automatic transmission with 16 gears forward and 2 reverse. The engine and transmission are the same as on the M915, but the M916 is fitted with an Oshkosh transfer case. The suspension is the same as on the M915. A winch with a lifting capacity of 20 tons is installed behind the cab. It is used for loading operations.
